Ch-ch-ch-changes + retro drink cabinets
Things are changing around here at ExhibitD and I want to share some news with you all, so read on, bear with me and keep an open mind. First of all, as you can see, I am writing in English again, and intend to do so much more often from now on. I know this is a Romanian blog, but my readers are not exclusively Romanian and the main reason – I must admit – is the fact that I find I can express myself better, easier, faster and with more oomph in English. I guess this is all due to a great part of my education being assimilated in English class, or from reading a lot in this language. A metaphor or an expression in English comes immediately to my mind, whereas I struggle to find the words for it in Romanian. Please don’t be hatin’! I’m not doing this to deny my native language, it’s just that I’m more at ease writing in English and I think it’s very important for me to be at ease on this blog, where I am talking to you, dear reader. Otherwise I would be fake and I’m sure we don’t want that! Besides, I do think most of us know English and for other languages, there’s the Translate button over there on the right column. I know there will probably be some issues as Romanian is set as the default language and posts can’t be translated to Romanian, but I’ll try to fix that in the future. Also, DIY and other posts that contain instructions, will be posted in both languages. For now… enjoy the experience as is.
The other news, a much more important one, is: I just sold my house! This one, that I showed you a while ago when I took you on a “Christmas-y” tour of my home. So, basically, the main reason why I only managed to write a few posts over the past two months has been the fact that I’ve been running around like mad to take care of all the paperwork. The sale just closed yesterday, so the news is fresh and, as we say… let’s drink champagne! You’re probably wondering why I sold it (a lot of my friends have called me mad to sell such a nice house – to them I say thank you, it’s an honor, I only heard the nice part), but don’t worry, it’s not because I’m neck deep in debt, it’s just because I needed a change. I love this house and always will, it was my first home as an adult and it was tailored to my specific needs and desires. But the time has come to move and I don’t regret this decision one bit.
So what’s next on this show? Well, seeing as I have to move by Christmas, I have been looking frantically for a new place, but you know by now I’m not easy to please. I wanted to find a place that was run-down, but had great potential, so that I could do what I love most – redecorate it. And I think I found it. At this point it’s still under discussion, but I’m confident that this is the one, after seeing so many, I finally get the “home” vibe, if such a thing exists. Or maybe it’s just the “really cool design project” vibe, but either way, it’s good.
this Northstar retro refrigerator with a beer draft would be so welcome in my kitchen
The only problem here is that run-down is a mild word for the state this place is in. It hasn’t been inhabited for 10 years and all one can keep is the walls. So I’m starting from scratch. Which isn’t at all an issue for me, except for the costs, obviously. Anyway, I promise to keep you posted and if things turn out as they should, there will be a lot more DIY projects on ExhibitD. So, wish me luck!
Now, I’m not really a patient person, so I’ve already started collecting ideas for a new place – as is the case with my new obsession for getting a fireplace. Also, I’m in my retro-industrial phase, so if my mood doesn’t change too soon, you’ll see more of this in the future. So one day, browsing the online market sites, I found a retro drink cabinet. And I bought it!
no, it’s neither of these, but I’ll post photos of it as soon as I can (it’s in storage for now)
Now, I am a firm believer that one should have a bar at home and that cocktail hour is not just an expression, but an institution. Besides, weren’t people more elegant and refined in the 60’s? Wasn’t life more glamorous and didn’t they look more relaxed, even with the threat of nuclear war spread out on pages of magazines and newspapers? I’m sure alcohol helped a lot. You tell me, are we happier now, running from home to work, to the bank, to the supermarket, to pick up the kids from wherever they are and home again, spending 8+ hours a day in front of a computer and eating and drinking in a haste?
If you have mixed feeling about this, just take a look at these inspiring pictures and picture yourself in a Jetsons universe… I do hope you know what I’m talking about here. Here I go, showing my age again.
Such amazing timeless design, don’t you think? Even graphic design looks so effortlessly cool.
I hope a certain former Madrid resident recognizes this place…
Now, go fix yourself a drink and check out Tom Ford’s A Single Man or any of the old 007 movies for more inspiration. Doctor’s orders!

Hi Daria.
Oh, it’s not an easy period when you sale and buy home. But finally, if you found something that you love it’s worth. I did it 5 years ago and I am still decorating my home.Good luck in this project.
